Walnut Creek police are searching for two people who robbed the Sunnyvale Market and Deli at about 9:50 p.m. Tuesday. One of the robbers was armed with a gun and wearing dark clothing and a hooded sweatshirt—the common uniform of market robbers.
He entered the store in the 1500 block of Sunnyvale Avenue, ordered everyone to the floor, swiped cash from the register, then fled outside to a black, four-door BMW with a passenger waiting inside. The market is located just off North Main Street and across from the strip mall that features Starbucks and BevMo! And, incidentally, it's not far from the southbound entrance to Interstate 680. Unfortunately, businesses close to easy freeway access tend to be targeted for robberies, or so police sources have often told me.
The suspect is more specifically described as a black male in his late 20s with an average build and bald head. The BMW had paper dealer plates.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Walnut Creek Police Department at (925) 943-5844.
And maybe this isn't the time to mention this, but why not give this market and its employees a boost (and some business) after suffering a traumatic event? Yelp reviewers give this market great reviews for its fresh produce, friendly employees, and specialty goods--spices, cheeses, sweets, and other items, many with a Middle Eastern flair.
"The new owner has great taste and high standards with a generous nature," wrote one reviewer. "He regularly has something new to try and the selection covers the best of the middle east; Turkey, Iran, UAE, and Syria as well as local goods. The butcher has excellent fresh lamb. Must try: Chocodates, Lord de Pastry, Beef mortadella, spicy turkish soujouk, pistachios and whatever the owner recommends."
Little update: Stopped in at Sunnyvale Market and Deli a little while ago, and the place had plenty of customers. It's small, but clean, well organized, and as the Yelp reviewers said, it is stocked full of tasty looking meats, cheeses, dates, produce, cookies, and Middle Eastern bread. I admit I didn't buy anything, but only because I couldn't decide on what to buy. But next time, I try to do a Mediterranean or Middle-Eastern-themed dinner, I'm heading there.

That was very nice of you to add a review.I have never been to the market & deli but now plan to visit it in the future.I didn't even know about it until right now.
Yes, the selections sounded delicious. If the market is open today (and it might not be, given what happened last night), I think I'll stop by and see if there is anything I can pick up for my very boring, at-home New Year's celebration this evening.
