Tracy girl's body found in recovered luggage

Sad news from Tracy and Sacramento TV station Fox40:

Sources within local law enforcement tell FOX40 News the body of 8-year-old Sandra Cantu was recovered from inside a piece of luggage pulled from a drained irrigation ditch north of Tracy.

Cantu had been missing since Friday, March 27. when she disappeared while returning home from a friend's house at the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park.

Authorities have not made any arrests in the case, although their investigation has focused on several persons of interest.

KRCA.com adds:

Investigators said they were able to identify Cantu's body based on the
clothing she was last seen wearing.

Farmworkers found a black, sealed case Monday while they were draining a pond near Bacchetti Road, about two miles from Orchard Estates.

Police said it was a black piece of luggage of significant size with both hard and soft sides. Officials in white suits removed the luggage from the pond shortly after 5 p.m. It was loaded into a van and driven to the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office in French Camp. An autopsy will be conducted Tuesday morning.

I figured as much when I heard that they had found a black bag today.

Geez, I am just so sorry for her parents. I'm glad that they found her, though, so her parents don't have to go through their lives wondering what happened to her.

Sleep peacefully little one.

Let us hope that the monster who did this is brought to justice soon.

Prayers for those who loved her.

Absolutely heartbreaking. It can not ever be understood, as there is no sense to be found. My prayers are with her family and friends.

This is so tragic, yet seems like it should of been totally preventable. Why was this girl allowed to walk from one friends house to another, alone, at the age of 8?

RIP

I understand that the trailer park in which she lives is very small and that the distance of the homes she went to is not very far.

PLEASE don't start blaming the victim's parents. What if she had been taken from her front yard like Amber Swartz-Garcia?

I'm sure most violence against children could be prevented if we simply kept them inside and under lock and key and make sure that they're good an paranoid about people.

I still wouldn't allow an eight year old to just walk from house to house, no matter what neighborhood. It's not blaming the parents, it's called responsible parenting.

6:29,

No, it's called paranoia. Haleigh Cummings (the Florida girl) was kidnapped from her bed. Perhaps we should all sleep with our children to prevent a home abduction.

You most certainly are blaming the parents, and you should be ashamed of yourself.

Children older than Sandra are kidnapped, so we shouldn't allow 14-year-olds or 16-year-olds to walk to the store?

Children should be able to play in their neighborhoods. I live in a safe neighborhood, I guess. I allow my kids a reasonable amount freedom.

Jail, or perhaps re-education.
