... to see the new Star Trek movie!!!Yes, I'm a bit of a Trekkie. Not super die-hard because I'm only devoted to the original series, which, joy of joys, you can watch for free online at CBS.com. Also, I've only seen a few of the Star Trek movies that were based on the original series, including, of course, the great Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan. (In my opinion, one of the best films of the 1980s!)
My son and I went to see Star Trek on opening night. We were both giddy with excitement, and enjoyed it. I've been introducing my son to the original series online, and he's picked up on some key features of the original series:
1. One of the crew guys in the red shirt, who makes up any landing party to a new planet, will not live to survive to the end of the scene.
2. The Enterprise often gets taken over by invading aliens.
3. William Shatner liked to take his shift off as much as possible.
So, I've indoctrinated my son in the Church of the Original Star Trek. At first, this boy, long exposed to huge blockbusters featuring whiplash story lines and CGI-laden special effects, had to get used to a somewhat slower pace, comparatively cheap-looking sets, and cheesy looking special effects. But, he soon became entranced by the original series' rich, compelling stories and intelligent writing (yes, that's right!) and the beloved characters.
Here's the Vulcan Spock with his human mom, Amanda Grayson. I won't spoil what happens in the new movie, which is a prequel to the original series. But there is this whole thing (which I only kinda followed because the movie races by pretty quickly) about a parallel universe and reality, which leads to certain storylines that contradict what (would happen later) in the original series.
But I guess that's the whole point. Star Trek always liked those parallel universe/time warp story lines. And, as we Trekkies know, Spock's mom sticks around to come visit him on the Enterprise in a famous Season 2 episode, The Journey to Babel, and winds up giving her conflicted bi-species son some sage, nurturing motherly advice.

I have a lovely weekend with my husband son, and my own mother, and my son made me the most amazing card, which, best of all, references, my "interesting" Star Trek obsession.
He's the best.
And if any Trekkies out there have any comments on the new movie...
Tell me if you saw any tribbles show up in the new movie. I spotted a tribble, as well as the pre-scene ending demise of a "red shirt" crew guy.
