Orinda boy dies at party, possibly by drinking too much; 18-year-old rugby team friend arrested

Update 7:30 p.m.: An 18-year-old fellow rugby team member and neighbor, suspected of hosting a raucous, unsupervised party involving underaged revelers, was arrested in connection with the possible alcohol-related death of an Orinda teen.

The Contra Costa Times reports that Patrick Gabrielli was arrested on suspicion of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and giving alcohol to a minor. He was booked into county jail and subsequently released on bail.

Gabrielli's arrest is related to the death of Joseph Loudon, 16, (pictured here), described in a Times story as a popular Miramonte High School athlete and sophomore. Loudon was taken to a nearby hospital late Saturday night after collapsing in the hallway of an Orinda home, where the party was taking place.

The party involved high school and college students who were said to be drinking heavily; the occasion for the party may have been a celebration for the Lamorinda rugby team, of which both Loudon and Gabrielli were members.

1 p.m. Sunday: A few days after we learned that a young Lafayette man was implicated in the alcohol-related hazing death of a student during a Cal Poly fraternity pledge ritual, news comes that another local young man has been involved in a death possibly related to drinking. And this time, the young local man was the victim.

Miramonte High School sophomore Joseph Loudon, 16, appears to have died of drinking at an unsupervised party in Orinda, a Contra Costa Coroner's deputy has told the San Francisco Chronicle. The party was being held at a home on the same street where the boy lived, and the owners of the house were reportedly not there at the time.

Loudon was attending a party at which there were a number of other high school and college students. Partygoers found him unconscious in a hallway in the house at about 11 p.m. Saturday. He was taken to Kaiser Permanente, the nearest hospital, in Walnut Creek, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy is pending, and Orinda police are investigating.

I know everyone is still reeling, but this poor dad is so out of touch.. as quoted in the chronicle, the dad of the boy arrested says: "I doubt highly that if there was alcohol, that my son provided it," the elder Gabrielli said. "I don't think he knows how to buy alcohol, much less drink it."

Doesn't know how to drink it? Having a parent this out of touch with reality is alarming, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on this one as I'm sure its been a bad day.

I was seriously misquoted, I said he had no experience in buying alcohol-not knowledge of how to buy. Its a subtle difference. A nice young man has died, and his memory and family deserve more respect, compassion and fewer harsh criticisms here.

You do realize this is the internet right? One that allows anonymous comments, so good luck with that, people are going to write however they feel regardless of how it may hurt others.
