WC joining other cities to seek funds to help area's newly homeless, especially homeless families

Walnut Creek is joining with Concord, Pittsburg, and Antioch to apply for $1.2 million in federal Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program funds.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has a $1.5 billion pot of money for this homeless program.

Walnut Creek and the three other Contra Costa cities are jointly applying for these funds and intend to use them to subcontract with private nonprofit agencies to create a coordinated network of homeless prevention counseling and financial assistance programs.

If this four-city application is successful, Walnut Creek would receive up to $300,000 to give to a collaborative of nonprofits to provide counseling and short-term financial assistance for housing for Walnut Creek families who have recently become homeless or are in danger of becoming homeless.

Walnut Creek's housing program manager, in a staff report, is urging the City Council Tuesday night to adopt a resolution to seek these homeless prevention funds.

Since you want to help homeless people so much, please post your address and how many homeless people you can take in.

Is anon 2:19pm another jerk, or jerk 7:51am again?

There are a lot of people in trouble through no fault of their ownnow because they were laid off and/or had family health crises.

You may not want to help them. If so,I don't want to help you if you get in trouble either.

Anon 3:45...come on now. You know that most of the homeless are not people who just had an unfortunate life experience and suddenly find themselves tossed out on the streets. That does happen but not all that often. Go to SF and interview the homeless and see how many are there because of drinking and/or drug use.

I am perfectly willing to have my tax $$ going to the homeless as long as they are taken off the streets and put into a recovery program, or a mental health facility if they are mentally ill.

I do not endorse throwing tax $$ at people who continue to wander the streets and live under bridges.

Sorry anon 4:29, I thought you actually read Soccer Mom's article before you commented:

"If this four-city application is successful, Walnut Creek would receive up to $300,000 to give to a collaborative of nonprofits to provide counseling and short-term financial assistance for housing for Walnut Creek families who have recently become homeless or are in danger of becoming homeless."

I would like to see families who have recently become homeless get some assistance, just as the article reports this effort would provide.
