Walnut Creek man killed in crash near Fresno, wife and daughter hospitalized

The Contra Costa Times reports that a 40-year-old Walnut Creek woman and her 5-year-old daughter survived a head-on crash that killed the woman's husband and the driver of the other vehicle on Saturday.

According to the Times, the 43-year-old Walnut Creek man was identified by friends and family as Darren Brown. His wife, Victoria Brown, and daughter, Bethany Brown, were hospitalized--Victoria Brown in serious condition. The little girl was not seriously hurt and released from the hospital Monday.

The crash occurred about 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Madera County, about 25 miles north of Fresno. The family was riding in a pickup truck that for reasons still under investigation crossed into traffic coming from the opposite direction. The family's pickup crashed head-on into an oncoming pickup truck. Both trucks caught fire. The Walnut Creek man died, and passers-by pulled the mother and daughter from their pickup. The driver of the other pickup died in the fire.

What a horrible event! To die in a car fire...? Ugh.

Wonder if someone fell asleep at the wheel, and that's what caused it?

Terrible.

I heard this devastating news over the weekend. It was very foggy on the highway that afternoon. My sister is close with the family. My prayers go out to all. What a horrible loss.

Dear CS,
Please have your sister extend my condolences.

I actually met with someone who works at the Walnut Creek elementary that Bethany attends. And the school community is very saddened but ready to step in and help if Bethany and her mom return to Walnut Creek. Let them know that I would be very happy to post any notice about a fund for the family, to cover memorial expenses, health expenses, or whatever the little girl needs.

The worker at the school had nothing but kind things to say about Bethany's parents, that they were good solid people. The worker was thinking about what Victoria and Bethany will have to deal with as they recover from this.

Thanks, Soccer Mom! I'm just reading your reply & will forward the info. :) My sis was just visiting with Bethany (at home with relatives) & Vicky (in the hospital) this weekend. They have a long road ahead.

If people would like to help, please check out the obituary for Darren for information on where donations may be sent:

The accident was 100% NOT Darren's fault. The other driver is the one that crossed into oncoming traffic. The family was in the pickup towing a trailer.
Please keep Vicki & Bethany in your prayers. Vicki & family are very close friends of mine.
