Kids help clean up “poop” mess as WCI faces next year with one less vice principal

Some kids pulled a very messy prank this week by mixing chocolate pudding and water and smearing it all over the boys’ and girls’ restrooms.

A reader told me that some kids from the leadership class volunteered to help do the cleanup after they “saw the dejected look on the face of the lone custodian whose Herculean task it would be to clean the up the result of this nasty and wasteful joke.” The leadership teacher gave them permission to get to work. “This was a spontaneous gesture … and it shows the positive effects of teachers, home and community in teaching kids to be caring human beings and stewards of their environment.

Principal Kevin Collins praised their initiative on Thursday, the day before he released a letter informing parents about how the school will try to deal with disruptions on campus—from annoying pranks like the one mentioned above to more serious safety violations—with one less vice principal.

As you probably know, the district has been “deeply affected by the ongoing state budget crisis," Collins says. With the loss of one of two vice principals, Collins said he wanted to let parents know how the school plans to maintain a safe and secure school environment for students and adults.

Collins says:
Morning supervision next year will be covered by the principal in the east portion of the school (Walnut Boulevard) with the vice principal covering the west portion of the school for the 15 minutes prior to the start of classes.  The Campus Supervisor is assigned to the Iron Horse Trail gate and basketball courts from 8 a..m. until the start of classes every day.
The lunch supervision schedule includes a vice principal or counselor assigned to each lunch period.  The Campus Supervisor also covers both lunch periods.  We also assign a second person to the cover last twenty minutes of each lunch.  This supervision will be covered by the Principal or a Counselor.
After school supervision will be covered by the principal and vice principal assigned to either east or west campus supervision.  One counselor is assigned to monitor the bus pick-up area on Walnut Blvd. in the afternoon while the Campus Supervisor monitors the bus pick-up area on Civic Dr.

As for campus safety and discipline, Collins says:
In the 2010/2011 school year, some of the discipline duties will be shifted.  Minor discipline issues and database entries (lunch detentions, dress code violations, tardy referrals, etc.) will be addressed by the attendance office manager.  Counselors will be assigned to deal with minor teacher referrals, first offenses, and academic honesty issues.  The vice principal will be assigned to deal with more serious referrals and students with multiple discipline contacts.  The principal will deal with serious discipline issues and assist the Vice Principal with referrals and campus disruptions as needed.
We are proud of our school, our students, and our staff.  We share the common goal of ensuring that every student comes to school every day feeling safe and secure.  Our commitment to safety will remain the same regardless of the budget and staffing levels.

I bet these kids learned a more valuable lesson by doing that then they would have by getting indoctrinated by our America hating high school teachers and administrators.

Why do some of you have to turn a local blog into "Tea Party Central"? Yes I don't agree with your politics but I don't think this blog is the place for this argument. So many posts now are about "America haters" "Socialists", "Shoving down","Voting out" etc.

Why can't you post this on Fox News and discuss local issues here?

3:20--Yes! Thank you for brining this dangerous trend to our attention. Now I know to look out for signs that my child at WCI is being indoctrinated with America-hating values like helping out a fellow human being.

I have to admit, I've had my concerns about WCI. Like the other week when my son's band received a Unanimous Superior rating at the CMEA Band festival. I think they may have been playing music that was written by a non-American.

In social studies...did you know that they are studying ancient Greece and Rome? Why are they studying foreigners? Just because America's founding father's thought those cultures were important, it doesn't mean we should be exposing impressionable young minds to those dangerous ideas.

And don't get me started on the science teacher! Or the math teacher who makes math both fun and challenging (definitely something subversive going on there).

Thank you 3:20 for reminding us all that teachers are powerful and dangerous people. They have the ability to turn our children into thinking, helping, and creative human beings. What would America be like if we let this go unchecked!? Everyone...stop supporting Walnut Creek schools unless you want your tax money spent to turn out more children like the ones mentioned in this story.

picking up some dangerous notions like music and math and daily physical exercise.

4:58: well-written satirical comments, thanks for posting

That 3:20 post will probably never see any replies, he had 30-40 other blogs to go troll on and post his uneducated rants.

The smugness of liberals never ceases to amaze me.

Why don't you'all sit in a big circle and pat each others backs.

Liberals (who teachers and school administrators are primarily composed of) are ruining this great country of ours. Their American hating indoctrination of our youth is dispicable. Just check out Vice Principal Miguel Rodriguez at Live Oak High School.

VP Miquel Rodriquez should be fired, in my opinion, for stupidity.

3:20/2:17 - you take an inspiring story about a local school and kids and twist it into something hateful. Strange world you live in.

Anon 6:35,

NO it's a strange world you live in where kids get sent home for wearing the AMERICAN flag on Cinco De Drinko day.

If 9:00PM were a true patriot and not just a teabagger he or she would know that the proper treatment of the American Flag requires that it should never be worn as a clothing item.

Thanks for this inspiring story SoccerMom. The comments should have all been congratulations to these fine kids and great school. I'm sorry that this poor person can't let go of his anger long enough to do that.

Sounds like Principal Collins is pawning all his responsibilities on everyone else. Counselors are supposed to counsel not discipline. Do you see one more thing Collins has added to his plate? Collins needs to be a better principal instead dishing out his responsibilities on the remaining staff, especially the counselors. What kid is going to share his problems with the person that also dishes out discipline?
