Walnut Creek School District needs one more candidate to run

Walnut Creek School District Superintendent Patty Wool emailed parents Tuesday, announcing the decision, by long-time board member Dan Walden, to not seek re-election. He was one of three candidates running for three seats on the school board. Now that he's bowing out of the race, the race needs at least one new candidate to run.

Wool wanted to remind anyone interested in running that they need to file nomination papers at the county elections division by August 11.

Here's Wool's email:
Dear Walnut Creek School District Community,

Hopefully, everyone is enjoying a wonderful summer. The school district is gearing up for the 2010-11 school year and the reopening of schools on August 25. We did want to make sure that our entire community has heard that Walnut Creek School District board member, Dan Walden, will not be continuing as a board member after December when his term comes to an end. Dan has served with dignity the students of Walnut Creek for twenty-two years. His tremendous passion, expertise, and exuberance will be missed, and we thank Dan for his amazing work on behalf of the students of Walnut Creek. August 11 is the last date to file papers with the county elections office for the position of Governing Board member in Walnut Creek School District. If you would like information about the position, please contact any of our present board members.

Have a wonderful rest of the summer. See you in the fall.

My best,

Patricia Wool, Ed.D.

Superintendent
Walnut Creek School District

I'm sorry to post this here, but I don't know where else to post it.
Can you look into why the City of Walnut Creek is sending four department heads to a "CEPO" class in Santa Barbara? This is some leadership class at a relgious retreat and is costing $60,000 over three years to send these people. Plus they'll be paid their full salaries/benefits while they are away for a total of three weeks. Yes, it's $5000 per week per person. I don't know how they can do this when they are laying people off and cutting services. As a citizen of southern WC, this upsets me.

I would like to echo this. An additional section on this blog, maybe named "OPEN FORUM" or something like that would encourage people to post comments and threads on topics not reported on this site. I like that idea a lot. Is this possible? Of course, people would have to behave.

From the CEPO site

"Registration fees include triple occupancy room, all meals, and all training materials. Double occupancy may be available on a first registered-first paid basis. Registration for this very special week is only $2,310."

So no - not $5,000. Not maybe the best idea but not what you say it is, either.

Thanks for the clarification, that makes me feel a bit better. Add on their mileage at $300 per person and you'll probably get to about $2600 per week. So, more like $30,000 for the 3 years. It just sits wrong with me.
