Northgate students at school fundraisers must from now on adhere to dress code

That's the word from John McMorris, principal at Northgate High, in response to my inquiry about Saturday's car wash fundraiser in Walnut Creek at which, witnesses say, Northgate High cheerleaders were dressed in revealing bikini tops and short shorts that barely covered their buttocks.

I shared links to my blog posts here and here about the scene at one of the gas stations at Ygnacio Valley Road and Civic Drive, and to that of fellow blogger Mister Writer, who broke this story after witnessing for himself what he described as "scantily, barely clad young teens pushing breasts at traffic and pants that barely cover their ass." To him, this was more than a fundraiser for a school activity--this was "pimping."

Mr. McMorris thanked me for sharing the links and quickly wrote back that the situation had prompted discussion regarding "appropriate behavior with all programs." He said "the discussion is that all students will adhere to the dress code for these things, shorts, shirt, etc."

He didn't specify which dress code, but I'm figuring, correctly I hope, that he's referring to the dress code for the Mount Diablo Unified School District, which I share below. And I'm figuring he and his staff might be thinking of something along the lines of the outfit shown here. Thanks Mr. McMorris (or Dr.?) for getting back to me on this.

CODE OF CONDUCT--Dress Code

To support a culture of academic achievement at Mt. Diablo High and to eliminate unnecessary distractions and conflicts, the following dress code will be enforced. This code is in effect until a permanent one is drafted with input from students.

· Shoes must be worn at all times.
· Clothing, jewelry and personal items (backpacks, fanny packs, gym bags, water bottles, etc.) shall be free of writing, pictures or any other insignia which are crude, obscene, vulgar, profane or sexually suggestive, which bear drug, alcohol or tobacco company advertising, promotion and likenesses, or which advocate racial, ethnic or religions prejudice.
· Dress which is disruptive and contrary to school rules regarding drugs/alcohol/violence, and gang affiliated or related clothing is not permitted.
· Clothes shall be sufficient to conceal undergarments for males and females at all times.
· Student clothing such as, but not limited to, see-through or fish-net fabrics, halter tops, off-the-shoulder or low-cut tops, exposed midriffs and skirts or shorts shorter than mid-thigh may be prohibited.
· Dress that presents a health or safety hazard or a distraction which would interfere with the education process is prohibited.
· Women’s dresses and tops must cover their back and have two straps.
· Head coverings are acceptable with the exception of red, navy blue or brown bandanas.

Good work SM.

Now, would you please speak with the principal at WCI regarding enforcement of their dress code, especially the young ladies and their very short, shorts and skirts!!!!

Teaching young women to have respect for themselves is vitally important not only for their self esteem but for their own protection from evil people who lurk around, often unnoticed. It is also a very kind thing to do for the young men with whom they attend school and are expected to treat the girls with respect while their teenage hormones are raging because of barely covered boobs and bottoms.

I bet a bunch of teenage boys are really pissed off at you now.

Good job and thank you for your follow up on this. I was wondering why a slew of angry Northgate girls were posting comments on my site tonight denying and justifying. Sadly their comments added more fuel to the fire by dragging the Northgate swim team boys who apparently had done a car wash in speedos. I had not witnessed that or I would have surely said something there as well.

Nice job SM and Mr Writer! Can you now do a post to remind the youth that sagging jeans/pants isn't even in style anymore!?!

PULL UP YOUR PANTS!

Yes, Big Al, that is a fashion trend that continues to puzzle me, mainly because it has been around for about 20 years. Unless the guys who wear them now are doing a retro 90s thing?

Sorry to disappoint you SM and others. Even we old farts who grew up in the 50's pulled our Levis down well below our waists. Shocking at the time as you can imagine but at least we could walk and run unlike the kids today who stumble down the streets because their pants are so low.

Wow, citizen journalism wins. So happy we'll see less junior wannabe hookers on our streets. Now let's get started on the Red Hat obliteration. Red and purple together is completely heinous looking.

As a parent these fund raisers can be irritating and humiliating. I don’t like having my children go through the neighborhood trying to sell to the neighbors. I also don’t like begging my childless coworkers to buy cheap wrapping paper or cookie dough. Ugh! But, I very recently discovered the most amazing new school fundraiser company that sells organic, recycled, sustainable, non-toxic and biodegrable fund raising products. They are fabulous!!! It’s so much better to have our children selling items for their school fundraiser that people would really like and feel good about buying and using. Check out their site for ideas. This could be fantastic to support our schools and shop earth-friendly: http://www.brightgreenkids.net
Share this with your school or with friends who have kids in school. I think it’s amazing.

Congratulations, you've contributed to the downfall of true freedom by forcing your views upon others. If the kids are deciding to do things on their own who the hell are you, or for that matter anyone else, to tell them not to? They're certainly not hurting anyone with simple things like that. Now if there was someone telling them to dress this way that's another story, but as it appears to be their own choice, what business is it of yours?

@ Anonymous: In my experience the most scantily clad women seem to have the most respect for themselves... or at least the best ability to stand up for themselves, of any girls. But go ahead, keep telling them how to dress so they can be good and subservient, that's definitely the right lesson to teach.
