What's with the creepy baby mannequin in a downtown Walnut Creek store window?

Is it just me, or is there something about this very life-like mannequin that makes me worry that Walnut Creek has been hit with an invasion--an Invasion of the Body Snatchers--and that pretty soon our town will be filled with Pod Babies. And Pod People.

Or, has that Pod-ification of our population already started to happen? You tell me!

So, I was out and about last night, strolling up and down our lovely downtown streets, and came across a store that sells baby gear, and I saw this and other mannequins modeling the coolest of the cool baby fashions and baby accessories. The clothes and high-tech baby bathtub and other gear was cool, but the mannequins ... I don't know, seeing them gave me this cold, tingling feel running up and down my spine.

Well, if Walnut Creek is indeed under attack by alien invaders, remember what we learned from the classic 1956 sci-fi filmm Invasion of the Body Snatchers.  Don't go to sleep! Because that's when your alien double, growing in a pod hidden by the alien leaders in your garage, emerges from its pod and takes over your identity--and your soul.

I'm not a big fan of baby mannequins either.

Something else I saw a while ago. There are crafters who make life-like doll babies, they have voice sounds, and collectors actually cart them around in baby carriages, car seats, they decorate entire bedrooms as nurseries. google search it and if you watch a video it will amaze you and probably creep you out at the same time. Personally, I would never own one. Sure, it takes talent to create these, but just too odd for me.

I don't find the doll creepy but I don't find it attractive either. The doll may be lifelike but it's not a happy baby and it doesn't make me want to buy the clothes (or go into the store to see what else they might have). Actually, I want to get away from it before it starts crying or poops.

Yeah, baby mannequins strike me as a little creepy, right up there with some overly "lifelike" baby dolls that have come out in recent years.

I do like, however, that they're apparently trying to represent ethnic diversity with this one. The mannequin's appearance and headwear and clothing patterns put me in mind of the clothing one sees worn by some Hmong members of the Bay Area, typical of that of their Laotian ancestry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hmong_people

I agree that it's kind of creepy looking. Maybe it's just that it sort of looks like a baby but is plastic.

I know what store you're talking about SM. Can I say? Bought some great baby shower gifts in there but the fake babies are kind of weird looking.

Sorry but this photo makes me think of those really dead baby jokes.

The mannequin is just another example of the bad taste in Walnut Creek. These store owners really need to visit other areas where the retail centers are successful. They would see pretty quick why their businesses fail so miserably here...and this is beyond the economy. Most of the stores around here deserve to go out of business because they are poorly merchandised, poorly promoted, and generally employ rude, disinterested sales people.
